In 1969, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of founding of modern Singapore, Radio Singapore organised a wealth of special programmes such as plays, youth programmes, variety shows and song competitions.
Radio Singapore also inaugurated a new FM stereo service on July 18, 1969 to cultivate better appreciation of music. Besides this, all full time services were transmitted in: Malay (National language), Chinese (comprising of 7 dialects), Tamil and English to promote mutual appreciation amongst various cultural groups.
Similarly, Television Singapore also focused on celebrating the 150th anniversary. They produced programmes based on youth activities and achievement to reflect their role in Singapore. One example is the TV series which featured the Singapore Youth Festival.
Television Singapore has played an indispensable role in nation-building. Its newscast, documentaries, dramas and other programmes have opened Singapore to the world which raised expectations and helped to refine our society.
