National Museum Art Gallery
The National Museum Art Gallery was officially opened by Mr Jek Yuen Thong, then Minister for Culture on 21 August 1976. The 2440 square metres large Art Gallery was financed by a contribution of $200,000 from the government as well as a donation of $1,148,816 from the Singapore Arts Council.
The National Museum Art Gallery endeavoured to stimulate public interest not only in the visual arts but also in all other art forms. Its 80-seater theatrette served as a venue for talks, lecture-demonstrations, film shows, new plays, and recitals of music, drama, poetry and dance on a small scale.
The opening of the Art gallery, with both exhibition and storage facilities had also given impetus to the amassing of works by the expanding group of Singapore and ASEAN artists working in a variety of styles and media.
