National Day Parade telecast “live” in 1980

The 1980 National Day Parade at the National Stadium was the first to be broadcast “live” on television. Some 14,000 people from all walks of life took part in the parade. Highlights of the parade included a float procession and a fireworks display. The fireworks display was staged at the Marine Centre Reclamation Site and lasted about an hour.

Twenty-six government bodies, statutory boards and industrial organisations participated in the float procession. The floats depicted the social, cultural, economic and industrial aspects of Singapore. The procession was held in the evenings of 9 and 10 August 1980, covering the major housing estates and city area.
