Opening of Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
 
 
The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay performing arts centre opened with a 3-week gala festival that started on 12 October 2002. About 1,300 artists from 22 countries performed in 70 productions and 600 free events. Affectionately known as the “Durian” because of its spiky roofs, the Esplanade stands near Marina Bay at the mouth of the Singapore River.
This premier performing arts centre comprises of:
·         A 1,600 Concert Hall designed by Russell Johnson of ARTEC Consultants
·         A 2,000-seat Theatre spread over four levels
·         A 220-seat Theatre Studio for experimental theatre and dance
·         A 250-seat Recital Studio for chamber music, solo recitals, cabarets and jazz concerts
·         library@esplanade –the first performing arts library
·         A 300-metre waterfront with outdoor space for activities and performances
